In 2005, I moved from America to Belgium. Stripped of my social infrastructure and cultural touchpoints, I shed all my labels and tossed my identity on a compost heap to be recycled.
Originally, I described my experiences as an expat in a blog at this URL called V-Grrrl in the Middle. While living in Belgium, I began experimenting with mixed media art, making cards and art journal pages. When I returned to the United States, I reinvented this site to share my newfound hobby and my passion for creative writing.
The name Compost Studios reflects my belief that the circumstances that break us have the potential to yield fertile soil for new growth and creativity. In the midst of change and in everyday routines, we can imagine a different ending, catch a new vision, see something extraordinary in the mundane.
Compost Studios is the place I use art to reflect on the process of regeneration that is the essence of life. Like me, it is an imperfect work in progress, but I hope that among its pages you find inspiration and a reason to smile.
