Tell me how thrilled you're not

The other day mamatulip  asked her readers to list their favorite book, CD, TV show, and gorgeous celebrities.

I’m borrowing the idea but taking a different approach. I don’t want to know what wows you, I want to know what wows everyone else but leaves you feeling distinctly underwhelmed.

1. What book have you disliked but the public has raved about?

I’ve never been inclined to read The DaVinci Code, I hated Bridges of Madison County, and I thought the first chapter of The Corrections was brilliantly written but the rest was a disappointment. I couldn’t finish it, even though it won the National Book Award.

2. Which band do you think is most overrated (or which band/artist makes you want to change stations)?

Most teen love songs make me want to hurl. The more someone pines for someone else, the less I like it.  Bleah.

3. Everyone says these celebrities are “beautiful” but you say, “Huh? Ya gotta be kidding!”

Kate Moss has forever and always looked like a skanky, chain-smoking whore to me. There I’ve said it, and now I feel so much better.

4. Everyone’s talking about this show, but you’ve never seen it or don’t like it...

For me, this is every show since I don’t have cable or satellite and haven’t watched network TV in 25 years. Yeah, I’m a freak.

5. They’re supposed to be smart/funny but you think they’re stupid and/or insufferable. Who is it?

Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Dr. Laura, Howard Stern and anyone who makes a living acting self-righteous and making caustic or crude comments about other people. Shut up and get real. Make the world a better place.

True confession: I like David Sedaris but often I find his essays more poignant than funny.  I don't really think of him as a humor writer.

I love this post.

I thought the film _American Beauty_ was highly overrated, as is Celine Dion, and I don't think Anna Kournikova is all that beautiful.

Book? Empire Falls by Richard Russo. Couldn't get past the first chapter.

Band? I think the vast majority of music out there right there is overrated.

Celeb? I agree wholeheartedly about Kate Moss. I feel the same way about Goldie Hawn and Mel Gibson.

Show? I've never seen an episode of Veronica Mars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or House. Or Grey's Anatomy.

Not-funny people? Again, with you on Howard Stern. And Dr. Phil.

Book: I shouldn't admit this but I haven't read a real book in years. Never was able to read anything that didn't grab me in the first few pages...

Band: Does all the music suck because we are old? I want some good time Rock and Roll like Van Halen made when Diamond Dave was at the helm.

Celeb: Kate Moss IS a skanky, chain smoking ho. Most of the pretty faces in Hollywood and the rest of the media are basically lacking in soul and integrity.

Show: Same here - less than 1 hr of TV per week. A couple episodes of House in the first season were good. It seems as though the good writers who start up a show never stick around.

Talk: Oprah is a %#*@ self righteous windbag.

Ok - no more anger today....

I feel the same way about David Sedaris, but you gotta admit some of his observational stuff is FUNNY! Like Six to Eight Black Men? That's comedy gold.

Also, Skanky chain-smoking whore is my name of the week for people who are getting on my nerves. Love it.

Hey TB,

That essay is very funny. Living in Belgium, I have actually seen what he is talking about at Christmas, and let me tell you, as an American, it's more than a little disturbing!
