My life in quotes

(Thanks Di)

Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend - or a meaningful day.

Let me add an additional quote:

"Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young."

This is an expat thing, right. I know a lot of people in Brussels who are scared of making friends for fear that at some point they'll move back home. Kind of sad not to take the chance to reach out to someone; that it's only worth it if you think it's going to last...how long? A lifetime?
I wrote more about this here, if you're interested: http://simonlitton.livejournal.com/1172.html

I have friends that go back more than 30 years, and we've stayed in touch even though we've always lived apart. While many of my friendships last a long time, some have faded away. I only have one close friend from college. I think it's fine to move on when you outgrow a friendship; some folks are only meant to be friends for a time, others for longer. What struck me here is that a relationship needs to be meaningful and represent a substantial connection.
