Postcards to My Daughter (5)
This is my daughter's first year at sleep away camp--no cell phones, no computer, no phone calls home. These are meant to make her look forward to daily mail call. -

Radio City Music Hall (5)
It had been many years since I first visited Radio City Music Hall. It was refurbished in 1999, and it was a thrill to be there again. The space is architecturally inspiring, grand in the best sense. My simple point and shoot camera doesn't begin to capture the experience, particularly the glory of the largest crystal chandelier I have ever seen. -
White Rock Lake Tour (8)
I flew to Dallas in October to see Granola Grrrl and together we did a tour of artists' home studios. Often the artists collections of raw materials were as interesting to me as the finished art. I enjoyed seeing their work spaces, sources of inspiration, and their yards. -
Garden (6)
Baby steps toward becoming a gardener. -
Chez V (7)
My friend Sherry, a crafting goddess who is responsible for launching me into the world of rubber stamping, made these letters for my studio. They spell out Chez V and each one shows how well Sherry, my friend since seventh grade, knows me. -

Valkenburg, Holland (12)
Di and Gert took me on a lovely outing to Valkenburg, Holland. The town was beautiful and decorated for Christmas. We visited a Christmas market located in caves that had been created by the Romans when they were harvesting stone. -
The ugly shoe hall of fame (8)
I admit it. I put comfort before beauty, thus round-toed, clunky entries in the Ugly Shoe Hall of Fame. When it comes to boots though, I'm all about pretty and pointy. The better to kick butt with. -
Swamp Cake (4)
K sent this recipe for an unusual cake that defies all the normal baking conventions. It makes a moist chocolate cake with a built in fudgy layer of "frosting." The recipe was attributed to Mollie Katzen and is called Eclipse Cake, but E-Grrrl took one look at it and re-named it Swamp Cake. -
Namur, Belgium (5)
The first week in October, we visited Namur. We've made the trip there many times and never tire of this charming city in Wallonia, its spectacular views, and Saturday market. My favorite perfume ever is made in the Citadel here, Passion by Guy Delforge. -
Free Hugs--Brussels (3)
Javacurls and I went into the heart of the city to dispense Free Hugs to people who couldn't read our signs! Calin Gratuit Toujours. -

Souvenirs (9)
This is a photo essay for a reader who asked if I had collected any Belgian souvenirs. -
New house (23)
Here are photos of our new (old) house in Virginia. Furnishings are the current owners. We won't move in until March. The bathroom photos are included to show the antique vanities and cabinets, which are more than a hundred years old. The fireplace mantel is antique. The deck wraps around. The kitchen tile and cabinets were hand made by a local artisan. My photos of the dining room didn't come out well so I didn't post them. There's an office off the kitchen that I didn't photograph, and four bedrooms total. -
New glasses (2)
Depending on your monitor, it might be hard to see that the frames are a royal purple color. -
I came all the way from Brussels to America... (2)
to find a Belgian restaurant within walking distance of the apartment we're staying in. -

Luxembourgh (8)
We spent the weekend in Luxembourgh, and I thought it was beautiful and full of charm. Wish the stores had been open on Sunday. -
A look inside (9)
Teebs at Soul Gardening requested photos of the house we live in. Here a few just showing some of the architectural details I love in the interior. -
Cats for adoption in Brussels (9)
Some of my friends work rescuing cats in the Brussels area. Can you give one of these sweeties a home. -
Waiting on the world to change (4)
John Mayer isn't the only one waitng on the world to change. -
Memorial Day (3)
Henri Chappelle Cemetery, The Netherlands. 8,000 American graves. Ten American Boy Scouts. One very long day of cleaning headstones. -
Royal Greenhouses at Laeken (4)
Built in the 19th century by King Leopold of Belgium, the Royal Greenhouses are only open to the public once a year for a three-week period in the spring. They contain exotic tropical plants as well as ordinary flowers, and the architecture of the greenhouses is quite amazing. -
Gent, Belgium (4)
I took a trip to Gent with some American friends. The city is beautiful and historic and known for its tapestries. I bought some tapestry runners and this pillow, which reminded me of home and my cats Amy and Petey. -
Enchanted Forest (6)
Every spring, the Bois de Halle in Belgium blooms with bluebells and becomes an enchanted forest. -
Animal House (6)
In addition to our own pets, we're caring for several others while families are on holiday. So here I present Spring Break at Animal House. -
Abbaye de Villers--Belgium (7)
Built in the 13th century, the Abbey de Villers later fell into disrepair. The stained glass is gone, the roof missing in many places, the walls covered with ivy. We visited on the day of the spring festival and were struck by the sense of the sacred that prevailed even as so much of what had been built laid in ruins. -
Wildflowers (3)
There's an abundance of wildflowers in Belgium in the spring. First the forest floor is covered in white and pink ones, and then in April come the bluebells, which create a fairy tale landscape. -
Photos by Di--Second time around (11)
For this series of photos, my friend Di put me on the floor while she leaned off a step ladder. No flash. No light umbrellas. No PhotoShop. More of Di's work at www.dimackeyphotography.com -
On my way to Margaritaville with Cindy Lane (1)
If only the flash had gone off, these photos of Cindy and I heading to Margaritaville on a cold Friday night in Brussels would be so much better. I'm posting them for their bleary-eyed wonder. Check out Cindy's blog, The Belgian Years. -
Spring Fever (4)
My two young Greenies are ready for spring. They sprouted beans on the window and planted all sorts of things in glass jars they rescued from the recycling pile. My son went to a pond near our house and gathered frog eggs for his terrarium. -
London calling (3)
E and I went to London to celebrate our 25th anniversary in March. We'd been there last fall as well, so didn't take many photos this time around. -
A damp day in Belgium (1)
You can gauge the weather by the pile of teabags that accumulates on the kitchen counter. On a cold, wet day in February, this is what the counter looked like by 2 p.m. -

Birthday Surprise Package (7)
My Home Grrrls got together for a tea party in honor of my birthday and put together a ginormous basket of gourmet teas, coffees, books, treats, and chocolates. E-Grrrl echoed my thoughts perfectly when she said, "Geez Mom, your friends TOTALLY spoil you." -
Au revoir, Amy (2)
After 13 1/2 years, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Amy on January 24, 2007 -

Welcome Petey the Cat (7)
This is Petey, the wild-eyed kitten we adopted. He looks like he's solid black but in sunlight, you see that his coat is shot with dark brown. Amy, queen of Chez V, surveys her new subject with a critical eye. -
In the forest (4)
Mushrooms fascinate me. I used to love to go hiking in Virginia the day after a rain and see what had sprouted overnight. I'm always amazed by how quickly mushrooms appear. Here are a few colorful samples I spotted on a walk I took Monday. -
All Souls Day, Belgium (1)
November 1 is a national holiday and a time to honor the dead. Belgians take this very seriously, as can be seen by this photo of a small cemetery by my home. -
London, England (8)
This includes photos of Kensington Palace, Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Guard, Westminister Abbey, Big Ben, London Tower, Tower Bridge, and a view of Parliament from the London Eye. -
Portsmouth, England (5)
Photos from our tour of the dockyard in Portsmouth. The first ship is the HMS Warrior, the second ship is the HMS Victory. That's me kissing the pirate. Wish he looked more like Johnny Depp. -
Walking with my camera (8)
These are some of my favorite scenes from a morning walk with my camera. The cottage with all the flowers is one of my favorite houses. You can't see in the picture, but the windows are stained glass. I love the white chicken coop and the "secret" gardens I can see as I stroll. Roadside shrines are common here. I'm not sure who builds them or who tends them. The smaller of the two pictured here is devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The other is to Mary. -
Scenes from a morning walk (5)
The skies were gray and the light not the best, but here are scenes from a recent morning walk. I love the old barns and chicken coops. The outside of the school features a display of colored pairs of clogs. -
Ever seen a hedgehog? (3)
My son rescued a hedgehog from the street by capturing it in a net. We let the hedgehog out in our backyard and observed it for quite a while. It was very docile, even letting the children pet him. It wandered onto the patio and crawled into my daughter's clog. -
Scenes where I live (13)
These are a few shots showing my front door, the cobblestone driveway, the flower arrangements at the bus stop, the country lane where I go walking. -
Famous in California (2)
Neil at Citzien of the Month loves V-Grrrl so much that he's throwing panties at the monitor! I'm honored because as you can see, I'm a fan of Citizen of the Month. -
Thanks JMo! (2)
JMo, a V-Grrrl reader, had bagels shipped from NY to Belgium. -
Cotswolds, England (4)
We took a guided tour of the Cotswolds, famous for its scenery, ancient architecture, and history as a center of the wool industry. Weather was overcast so photos don't do the area justice. -
Wells, England (3)
E-Man took the kids to Horse World, an attraction that offered horseback riding, a petting zoo, and barns to play in. Later that day we visited Wells and attended a Good Friday service in Wells Cathedral, which is stunning. -
Bath, England (3)
Thes Roman baths, which took advantage of Britain's only hot springs, were completely enclosed during Roman times and the water was clear. Other shots are of a park in Bath where E took the children to play after dinner each day. -
Stonehenge (2)
Photos don't do it justice. -
Windsor, England (3)
After flying into London, we stopped in Windsor on our way to Bath. Photos are of Windsor Castle. -
Beginning stamping projects (3)
These are samples of my first stamping projects. I made thank you notes to send out after my birthday. I also made some simple Valentines, which are pictured. The cards are sitting on their envelopes, which makes it looks like they're glued off-kilter to a white background. NOT. Sorry I couldn't get the Valentine shot to rotate....
