Forget the films, let's talk fashion at the Oscars

I admit it. Even though I'm a distinctly non-fashionable person in real life, I love to analyze the glamorous gowns seen on award shows.

After a quick click through Wire Image's red carpet photos on Yahoo, here's a snapshot of who scored and who didn't:

Reese Witherspoon never looked better in her life. The smooth yet slightly tousled blonde hair, the smoky eyes, the deep purple gown with its graduated shading and irregular hem conveyed confidence and glamour in a backhanded fashion. She looked impossibly sexy, and she's not someone I ever expected to pull that look off.

Nicole Kidman has morphed into someone who inspires an uneasy fear, like the White Witch in Narnia. She's too thin and too pale, her hair is too straight, and her face has been botoxed and surgically re-shaped until it has all the emotion and radiance of a plastic mask. Add the blood red dress and she just gives me the shivers--in a bad way.

Helen Mirren is who I want to be when I grow up. Elegant, beautiful, sexy, confident. I loved her gray hair, the fabulous beaded dress with the swishy skirt, her genuine smile and expressions. Plus the sight of REAL boobs and naturally sloping cleavage on the red carpet was refreshing.

Meryl Streep leaves me feeling so confused. A part of me admires the chutzpah it takes to show up at the Oscars in a kimono accessorized with chunky bohemian jewelry and post-menopausal bedhead. Is she making some kind of statement opposing the perfectly-turned-out character she played in The Devil Wears Prada? I don't know. Her talent is such that it seems a shame to quibble over her clothes; maybe she doesn't care but I  care. Meryl, you're the QUEEN, don't be afraid to shine a little!

JLo's unfortunate choice of a Grecian-style gown and country club bob took all the sizzle out of her Latina sex appeal. Sad. And every time I see a photo of Marc Anthony, I want to suggest a blood transfusion, IV, and some vitamins. He looks tubercular. Any second now, he's going to cough up blood.

Penelope Cruz's dress was so over the top, so va-va-voom. I didn't like the ballerina pink color and the fussy details yet I feel compelled to give it a thumbs up. She's Spanish and a former ballet dancer so a dress that is sweet yet spicy suits her.

And what's up with Cameron Diaz? She looks like she's going to the prom in that horrid white dress with the awkward portrait collar and freaky train. The messy hair and the orange tan--bleah! She has GOT to fire her stylist. Whoever is advising her on fashion, hair, and makeup is failing miserably. Come on, if you can't make Cameron Diaz look good, you ought to be working as an engineer or something!

Gwyneth Paltrow looks like a WASP-y version of Morticia on the Addam's family. In other words, I think she'd make a good date for Marc Anthony!

Beyonce is so beautiful, so radiant, so glamorous in an understated way, she deserves the best Oscar for styling. She is ALL THAT and pulled her look together perfectly.

And me, in my jeans, turtleneck, and down vest, I'm rockin the keyboard and glad no one cares (or knows) what bloggers wear.

My favourites were Rachel Weisz and Jodie Foster. Cate Blanchett always looks elegant but the dress was a little too close fitting maybe?

Rachel Weisz looked a little too pale, but that dress was gorgeous. Naomi Watts should follow the old rule that blondes should not wear yellow! Kelly Preston in that leopard print - waah!

Helen Mirren is just awesome, but then again - she always has been.

I think the men at the Academy Awards have it much easier than the women! James McAvoy looked great - oh wait, he always does!

Helen Mirren gets my classy vote too.

Did you catch the whole "writers" montage they did? That was fabulous.

No, I didn't actually get to see the show, just the photos. No one cares about the Oscars in Europe!

Sadly I fell asleep halfway through the show, but you are right on the money with Nicole Kidman. That's exactly what I thought. And Cameron Diaz never ever looks good in real life. She really has no sense at all of what looks good on her. It's weird because she's gorgeous on film.

I agree about Nicole Kidman, if you hold her up to a fairly bright light, you can see her organs.

Nothing puts the glow in a woman's cheeks than the ability to manage a successful career...and dump a trifling husband at the same time. Yay! for Reese.

Reece was stunning. And Leo DiCaprio gets better looking with age. The idea of a blogger fashion show makes me laugh, as I sit her typing in my down vest. Maybe we get extra points for consistency?

Well lil purple cow, MY down vest has a tres chic fur collar and slimming stitching that keeps me from looking like an, um, cow, when I wear it.

It's classic black and looks so lovely over my simple red cotton turtleneck and my sporty Levis. When I blog in the evening, I wear it over a sequined shirt.

Oh my gosh, I feel the same way when I see pictures of Marc Anthony. I've often wondered if he has liver problems...seriously.

I sit here in my workout clothes, sweaty and smelly after hitting the gym in my neverending quest to look a fraction as good as the women on the red carpet. Okay, I'm slightly delusional, but hey.... I thought Penelope looked stunning in her feather dress, but frankly they all did. (Well, I don't know what Meryl was up to.) It was a boring show, long and boring! No streakers, no boisterous political speeches, no outrageous outfits. Yawn! The only exciting thing that ALMOST happened is Gore announcing his candidacy. I nodded off during some of the key awards which they left until the very end. It needed some drama!

Isn't it amazing that all these stars with all these resources can make such bad choices? How hard is it to go classic and look elegant when you can buy those expensive dresses and be loaned those gorgeous jewels?

Nicole is just other worldly ... like something John Edward would call up and be talking to ...

I just read that Meryl was wearing Prada (as a nod to her film role) ... you'd think they had better choices than that though.

I liked Penelope, too ... she can carry off some dresses that many can't. Helen was great and Reese was fabulous (although I think I prefer her in the short dresses for her height). Jodie looked wonderful I thought ... nice color on her.

Cameron was better dressed here than at the Golden Globes, but still not the best and her hair needs some work. Again, doesn't she have the resources to look wonderful?

I am convinced Marc Anthony has celiac or some similar ailment that can "waste" one ... or a drug problem. BTW, he was quoted as saying he picked JLo's dress. Whatever happened to taking an honest girlfriend along for the shopping experience (well, I guess the designers come to the stars, but you know what I mean)?

Naomi Watts was wearing Cate Blanchett's Golden Globes dress. Seriously, look at the photos of both, and you'll see how close they are. And it looked better on Cate, who used a great term I loved: when asked about the Oscars, she said they were a great experience and a great excuse to "frock up". Why does that sound so much cooler than the American "dress up"?

Fashion or health of husband aside, can someone please tell me WHY Jennifer Lopez was even AT the Oscars? Does she even have an acting career? Can anyone name a single decent performance she has given in any film in the past year? Hmmmm....

And before I retract my claws, I loved the way Jack Black mentioned how hot he thought Helen Mirren was in the comedy number. I'm with you, V. She looks like she doesn't even have to try, unlike the costume designer they interviewed on the carpet earlier who was at least 70 but had flame red hair, a skintight red sequin number on, vintage Bvlgaria gold choker, and enough makeup to make a Vegas hooker say "tsk." Helen Mirren is a woman who has so much class and natural grace that it makes her stunning. Lots of people can take a lesson.

Oh, and I am currently wearing an understated ensemble of black polar fleece pants, black&white umbre fleece cardigan over a tasteful men's white vee-neck t-shirt, and for a dash of the unexpected, navy suede slippers. To die for.

You're so right about Helen Mirren. That woman is gorgeous. I hope I look half that good at that age. She and Diane Keaton are class acts.

Greetings from your German Expactica Blogger counterpart ... I loved your Oscar Fashion review!
February 26, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterRichard
Totally agree with you on all points, especially Penelope Cruz: right dress, WRONG COLOR!!
February 26, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterOrtizzle
I could not agree more with your report. Helen Mirren is the personification of class and beauty and the glories of the natural aging process. Diane Keaton, also 61, is gorgeous as well. Can I be a total pig and say that I thought Penelope Cruz's dress was a little too...high-necked? I definitely agree with your assessment of Beyoncé as ALL THAT. But don't be dissing my Meryl...

Great post, V. You can certainly write stunningly about fashion! I truly do not pay much attention to the clothes at the Academy Awards, I am not sure why, unless someone looks absolutely dreadful. And yes, Nicole Kidman's present look scared the hell out of me - she looked downright robotic.

Helen Mirren is one hell of a class act.
